Florida Gulf Coast University -Applying Discrete Mathematics and Data Analytics to Sustainability (FGCU-ADDS) REU Site

(NSF Support Pending)

Participants will stay at the FGCU housing at North Lake Village

With a student population of 15,000 students, FGCU is located on the Gulf Coast of Southwest Florida.

Applying Discrete Mathematics and Data Analytics to Sustainability (FGCU-ADDS)

Applying Discrete Mathematics and Data Analytics in Sustainability (FGCU - ADDS) at Florida Gulf Coast University is a proposed eight week residential summer research program that will support eight undergraduates as they develop into research mathematicians and form a community of support at a critical time in their education. During the summers of 2020 through 2022, the participants will be challenged with original mathematical research questions that are increasingly relevant to sustainability issues under the guidance of two faculty advisers.

We particularly encourage students hailing from groups underrepresented in mathematics, those who attend institutions without a doctoral program in mathematics or otherwise lack the access to undergraduate research opportunities, and students in their first two years of post-secondary education. We highly encourage students who are transitioning from two-year colleges into bachelor programs with the goal of pursuing a major in a mathematical science to apply.

More information and application materials will become available starting December 1, 2019. The application deadline is February 28, 2020.

Completed applications must include:

  • A personal statement addressing your potential career plans, what impact participating in this REU may have on those plans, and why you are interested in mathematics and sustainability.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty who can address your potential for collaborating on original mathematical research.
  • A completed google forms survey addressing what mathematics classes you have taken and your access to undergraduate research opportunities at your home institution.

Applicants will be notified by March 1, 2020. Please note that the NSF support for this program is still pending, and the program will not run if the support is not awarded in time.

FGCU is 70 miles from Everglades National Park

Cape Coral is the largest city in Lee County, Florida. It has more miles of fresh and saltwater canals that Venice. With all this water, Mosquito Control is an elected office in Lee County.

Cape Coral is also a nesting grounds for over 2500 Florida Burrowing Owls.

White sand beaches line the Gulf Coast of Lee County. These beaches are the native nesting grounds for many species of sea turtles and marine birds.
